Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has released the official notification for Junior Engineer Examination, 2026. The examination will be conducted for recruitment to various Junior Engineer posts in Central Government organizations/offices. The examination will also include recruitment to the post of Scientific Assistant in India Meteorological Department (IMD).
A total of 1,748 tentative vacancies have been notified. The posts are classified as Group ‘B’ and carry Pay Level-6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission with a pay scale of ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400.

Important Qualification Rules
- Where experience is required, it must have been acquired after completion of the prescribed educational qualification.
- Internship, training and research experience obtained during the course of acquiring the educational qualification will not be counted as the prescribed experience.
- The required educational qualification must be acquired by the prescribed cut-off date.
- Selected candidates must produce original educational and experience documents whenever required during Document Verification.

The crucial date for calculating age is 01 August 2026.

Nationality / Citizenship
A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from the countries specified in the official notification with the intention of permanently settling in India, subject to the prescribed Government of India eligibility certificate requirements.
Reservation
Reservation for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD candidates will be applicable as per the Government rules and vacancies reported by the concerned User Departments/Organizations.
There is no reservation for Ex-Servicemen (ESM) because the posts included in this examination are classified as Group ‘B’ posts. However, applicable age relaxation may be available to ESM candidates as per Government rules.

Paper-II
Paper-II will contain 100 questions carrying 300 marks. Candidates will attempt the relevant engineering/subject paper according to the Essential Qualification and subject selected in the online application.
Negative Marking
- Paper-I: 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.
- Paper-II: 1 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
- Both papers consist of Objective Type Multiple Choice Questions.
- Questions will be set in Hindi and English only.
A Scientific Calculator will be available on the computer screen during the examination. The required IS 456:2000 table and Steam Table, wherever required, will also be available on the candidate’s computer console. Physical calculators/tables will not be allowed inside the examination lab.

The standard of questions in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering will be approximately at Diploma in Engineering level. For Computer Science & Information Technology, Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, Physics and Telecommunication, the standard will be approximately at graduation level.

Paper-I is qualifying in nature. Candidates are shortlisted for Paper-II based on normalized Paper-I marks, subject to the minimum qualifying marks.
Final selection and allocation of Post/Organization/Office will be made on the basis of performance in Paper-II and the preferences submitted by candidates.

Normalization of Marks
If the examination is conducted in multiple shifts, the marks will be normalized according to the procedure prescribed by SSC. Paper-I normalized marks will be used for shortlisting candidates for Paper-II, while only normalized Paper-II scores will be used for determining final merit.
Electrical and Mechanical Engineering scores will also be normalized with each other for determining final merit and cut-off marks. For IMD, the applicable Part-D/Part-E/Part-F scores will also be normalized.
Post Preference
Candidates will be required to submit their preference for posts and organizations through the Online Option Form before the relevant stage of the selection process.
Once submitted, the post/organization preference will be treated as final and irreversible. Candidates who do not submit their preference within the prescribed period will not be considered for the relevant final allocation.
Candidates should therefore give their post and organization preferences carefully after checking the applicable educational, physical and medical requirements.
Important Note for BRO Candidates
Junior Engineer posts in the Border Roads Organization (BRO) have specific Physical Efficiency Test, physical and medical standards.
Only male candidates are eligible for the JE posts in BRO. Candidates applying for BRO should carefully check the prescribed standards before giving their post preference.
All India Service Liability
All posts carry All India Service Liability (AISL). Candidates selected for these posts may be required to serve anywhere in India.
Application Correction Facility
SSC will provide an online correction window from 28 September 2026 to 30 September 2026 up to 11:00 PM.
- A candidate can correct and resubmit the application a maximum of two times.
- First correction and resubmission charge: ₹200.
- Second correction and resubmission charge: ₹500.
- Correction charges are applicable to all candidates irrespective of gender/category.
- After expiry of the correction window, no further correction will be allowed.

Important OTR Information
The One-Time Registration created on the old SSC website ssc.nic.in will not be functional on the new SSC website. Candidates must complete OTR on the new SSC website.

Photograph and Signature Requirements
- The application module will capture a live photograph of the candidate.
- The photograph should be clear, full-frontal and captured without cap or spectacles.
- Candidates should not capture an image of an existing photograph.
- The scanned signature should be in JPEG/JPG format.
- Signature size should be approximately 10–20 KB.
- Signature dimensions should be approximately 6.0 cm × 2.0 cm.
- Blurred signatures can lead to rejection of the application.

Candidates claiming EWS reservation must possess the required Income & Asset Certificate for Financial Year 2026-27, issued on the basis of income for Financial Year 2025-26, in the prescribed format and from the competent authority.
PwBD / Scribe Facility
Eligible PwBD/PwD candidates may avail the facility of Scribe/Technology/Assistive Devices subject to the conditions, certificates and requirements prescribed in the official notification.
Eligible candidates receiving the scribe/compensatory time facility will receive 20 minutes compensatory time per hour of examination.
Examination Centre and Admission Certificate
Candidates can choose three examination centres in order of preference within the same SSC region. No request for change of examination centre will be considered later.
Admission Certificates will be made available online on the SSC website. They will not be sent by post/email.
Candidates who have not undergone Aadhaar-Based Authentication must report at the examination centre two hours before the scheduled start time and carry the Admission Certificate, at least two recent passport-size colour photographs and an original valid Photo-ID proof containing the Date of Birth as printed on the Admission Certificate.
Answer Key and Objection
SSC will place tentative answer keys of Paper-I and Paper-II on its website after the Computer-Based Examination. Candidates can submit online representations within the prescribed time by paying ₹50 per question. The fee for representation is non-refundable.
Document Verification
Document Verification of provisionally shortlisted candidates will be conducted by the concerned User Department/Organization after declaration of the final result.
If any claim made in the online application regarding educational qualification, caste/category, experience or other eligibility conditions is not supported by the required documents, the candidature may be cancelled.
Probation and Service Conditions
Candidates appointed through this examination will be on two years’ probation. During probation, candidates may be required to undergo prescribed training or pass examinations as specified by the Controlling Authority.
Selected candidates are liable to serve anywhere in India as the posts carry All India Service Liability.
